Watching the Salmon Run—at Mt Shasta?

The September Tour was scheduled to take us to Dunsmuir for brunch, then a stop in Mount Shasta before heading to Burney and then home again, but a phone call from our Tourmeister, Jerry brought some inside information—the salmon are running at the Coleman Fish Hatchery!  He hastily arranged for a route to take us through the less-traveled roads of northern Tehama County, culminating in a “bring-your-own” picnic lunch stop watching the fish jump at the hatchery.   I sent a last-minute e-mail message to announce the change of plans, and received several replies of folks who might have made the Mount Shasta trip, but couldn’t make the trip to see the fish.

We arrived at Oasis Auto Repair at the prescribed time and were welcomed by Dale & Gale Gleichweit, who didn’t get the e-mail message of the change in plans, but were ready to go anyway—without a lunch.  A few minutes later, Will & Kathy Thompson arrived and were ready to go—no e-mail, no lunch.  We decided that we would head  north to Dunsmuir for our original brunch, and maybe entice a few others to joins us as well.  A quick call was made to Mike and Sharon Smith in Lake Shastina to inform them of our change of plans and to ask that they make reservations for our brunch at a cozy little café in Dunsmuir.  As we were nearing our launch time, Harvey and Sue Weidman arrived and right behind them, Joe and a Sombath—you guessed it, no e-mail, no lunch.  About that time,  Sharon called back with confirmation that we had reservations for 8 for brunch.  “Sorry Sharon, can you make that 10, no how about 12? Just to be sure, maybe you can change it to 14.”  With a quick exchange of phone calls we  learned that the small café couldn’t handle a group this large, so we were headed to Mount Shasta for lunch at Lily’s.    Sharon made the final arrangements and 5 Porsches headed north on I-5 to enjoy the scenery and the Porsches.  At exactly 11:30, 5 Porsches parked side by side across from Lily’s and 5 couples joined Mike and Sharon for a great lunch at  a nice little restaurant.  A big Thank You goes to Sharon for arranging a great little get-together with little notice.

After lunch, we bid farewell to the Smiths and headed east on highway 89 to Burney.  We found a frosty stand in Burney that must have wanted to clear out their remaining inventory of ice cream.  Our “medium” cones had about
