In the family tree of racing Porsches all 911s since can be easily traced to this one model. In fact all 911s after the 73 RS use styling cues learned from its aggressive looks. It’s place racing history alone would be enough to make it a good addition to a Porsche collection. But even today, its popularity as a road going car is what makes it so desirable. The RS is a unique combination of investment and collector car that is just as exciting to own and drive as it is pleasing to look at. With nearly 1600 units built it is not rare by Porsche standards, but it commands a special place in the evolution of the 911.*1
Call it clone, replica, tribute or copy, the RS easily is the most reproduced of all Porsche models. The reason is because of its proven formula that works both in performance and looks. With the addition of wider fenders, wheels, more power and spoilers a clone can be made out a “regular “911. The result is just as much fun to drive and has the timeless looks of an original without the six figure investment.
*1 Excellence Was Expected by Karl Ludvigsen and the author’s own exposure to the car
