Porsche Trivia Consists of Informative Tidbits

Shasta Region President, Bob Dunlap, shares several Porsche trivia tidbits. We hope that you also share Porsche trivia with us. Just email Shasta Region webmaster to have your porsche-related tidbit posted on this page for all Porsche enthusiasts to enjoy.

Porsche Pronounced as.......

"Porsche", a proper name, is originally pronounced as, PORSH-uh, which is how members of the Porsche family pronounce their name.  Some tend to vocalize the e, which results in Por-SCHA. Others, particularly in Canada and the United States, mistakenly treat the e as silent, an English pronunciation rule that does not apply to German, producing the monosyllabic, porsh .

Porsche crest originated......

Did you know the Porsche crest originated in the USA?  Ferry Porsche, son of Ferdinand Porsche, originally designed the trademark Porsche crest, which consists of the coat of arms of Wurttemberg and Stuttgart and the signature “Porsche” above.  He envisioned it while visiting New York, drawing it down onto a napkin.

First 356 had a modified Volkswagen engine......
The first 356 had a modified Volkswagen engine that produced 35 brake horsepower at 4000 rpm.  This 1.1 liter powerhouse propelled the 356 to a top speed of 135 km/h or about 84 mph.

Who is Credited for the design of the Porsche 356?......

Although the Volkswagen Beetle and the Porsche 356 were both designed by Ferdinand Porsche, it was not the same man.  While Professor Ferdinand Porsche designed the Volkswagen Beetle, he was in an Austrian prison until 1947.  His son, Ferdinand “Ferry” Porsche had been the chief designer for Porsche for several years, and in 1947, Type 356 was conceived.  Professor Porsche provided advice for his son, but the credit for its design goes to Ferry Porsche.

The Porsche 968 holds the distinction of ......

The Porsche 968 holds the distinction of having the largest piston bore (104mm) of any production Porsche made.  These monster pistons accompanied by 16 valves and Porsche’s VarioCam timing system crank out 236 horsepower and propel the 968 to a top speed of 156 miles per hour.

Ferdinand Porsche created the first Porsche cars ......

After his post-war release from internment in France, Ferdinand Porsche settled in Gmund, Austria, where he created the first Porsche cars, with the 1086cc, Auto Union based engines with light alloy roadster bodywork.

The Porsche crest ......

The Porsche crest is essentially the coat of arms of the city of Stuttgart, which was built on the site of a stud farm—hence the horse.  The antlers and red-and-black stripes are part of the arms of the Kingdom of Wurttemberg.

The "Car of the Year" award ......

The “Car of the Year” award has existed since 1964, and is a prize given out by the car journalists.  The only sports car to win this award is the Porsche 928 in 1978.

The 2004 Porsche Carrera GT ......

The 2004 Porsche Carrera GT incorporated many unique features.  One was the PCCB (Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes).  The Carrera GT has a 5.7 liter V-10 engine cranking out more than 600 bhp and is mated to the transaxle via a ceramic clutch.  The car can travel at speeds of up to 205 mph and, at a cost of more than $440,000; it was one of the most expensive Porsches ever made.

The first Porsche car ......

On June 8, 1948, the first Porsche car was officially approved.  It was designated 356, and given the license plate K-45286.
